Luanda, capital of Angola, May 2006. The country had only recently emerged from a nearly thirty-year civil war, and it appeared before my eyes in all its contradictions. Angola is one of the richest African countries in terms of natural resources — oil, diamonds, gold and minerals hidden beneath its soil — yet what I encountered was a landscape marked by deep poverty. In the very same streets, I saw both the desire of a wounded people to rebuild their future and the harsh contrast of wealthy people driving large SUVs through puddles, splashing water and mud onto the faces of children. Luanda was a capital city where, because of the bombings, water pipes had become mixed with sewage systems, leaving many children without access to safe drinking water. The photographs I brought back with me were later used to create an exhibition. Through that exhibition, we raised €4,500, which was used to support a school in Lubango with computers, books, notebooks, pens and colours. Had we simply sent the money, very little of it would have reached its destination. The captions used in the exhibition are all translated from African proverbs.
